What is the SEAS TANK RAFFLE?
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:00:10 PM »
This year the SEAS officers have lost their minds and bought a 75 gallon tank!

Now the 75 gallon tank is nice in itself but.... we wanted something moreā€¦something better.  And we wanted to DIY.

From now through the April meeting we will create a tank for one lucky person to win.  Along the way we will show you how it was done and how to build your own.

We are going to drill the tank, build a custom internal weir (overflow), plumb a completely silent drain system, build a sump, plumb in a return pump and create a complete foam rock back drop.

We will be keeping everyone updated on the build through the website and meetings, as well as posting videos on each of the projects along the way.

Great, right?

So how do you get in on a chance to win this Custom Build?  Easy.

Purchase as many raffle tickets as you want throughout the year.  Tickets will be $5 each, available for sale during meetings by your fundraising coordinators Becky and Greg.  You will also have the option of purchasing raffle tickets online thru the Seas' Paypal account for an additional fee.

With a year long build like this we will have a lot to cover and some of it will be hands on with our members at the meetings.

Up coming meetings will include: (look for them on the calendar in the future)
    Designing and building a sump
Completing a foam rock wall or pillar (hands on for those interested)

Additional video presentations will include:
   Drilling a tank
   Building an internal glass overflow
   Plumbing a bean style overflow
Sizing and plumbing a return pump
   Designing your aquascape

Hey Eric, not sure how far you guys are into this yet, but have you thought about doing an external overflow box?

I've cut a couple slots in different tanks using a rotozip and a tile bit, as well as doing this on my 120 (acrylic).

It is a great space saver for inside the tank.  You just need to accommodate for some extra width behind the tank or on the end, depending on where you place it.

Just a thought.

Decided against the external with this tank.

Internal allows the final owner more flexability in tank placment and will blend into the foam rock project anyway.

Our thought process was to build a tank that just about anyone would like to have. Not too big, not too small, and as close to ready to run as possible. I'm happy that there is a lot of interest already, this will be a fun and educational project that the whole club will benefit from, and one lucky person will end up with a great system!
